Accommodations & Modifications

What's The Difference Between An Accommodation And A Modification?

What's The Difference Between An Accommodation And A Modification?

An accommodation changes how a student reaches the material while the expectation stays the same — extra time, a reader, typing instead of handwriting. A modification changes the expectation itself: fewer problems, simplified text, different criteria. Modifications can carry long-term implications that accommodations generally do not, which is why you should always know which one you are being asked to agree to.

Why Don't My Child's Accommodations Get Followed?

A support that requires something impractical in a real classroom will not happen, whatever the document says. The ones that work are precise, low-friction, and clear enough that a teacher who has never met your child could follow them. “Provide extra support as needed” fails all three tests and remains one of the most common phrases in these documents.

Do Accommodations Have To Be In Writing?

Teachers change, terms turn over, substitutes arrive. A support that exists only as goodwill will eventually disappear, usually at the worst possible moment. Verbal reassurance in a meeting has no force — a year from now, the written document is the only thing that exists.

When Sessions Run

This is usually a shorter conversation than a full document review, and it fits well into any of the weekly blocks: Monday to Thursday mornings 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, weeknight evenings 7:00 to 9:00 PM, Friday 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, or Saturday 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Evening and Saturday slots fill first.

Frequently Asked Questions

They can, because they change expectations. It is worth understanding fully before agreeing, and that is exactly what this review is for.

Written supports are part of a binding document. Documenting the failure is the first step toward addressing it.

Yes. You can request a meeting to revise them at any point.

Enough to meet real needs, few enough that each actually gets implemented. A long list often means none are followed closely.
